How To Style A Pleated Skirt

Pleated skirts are one of the most versatile and classic items of clothing that you can have in your wardrobe.

The style of the skirt and how they hang on the body make them flattering for a wide variety of different body types and they are sold in a large range of lengths and colors, ensuring there is a pleated skirt for everyone.

How to Style a Pleated Skirt

However, with so much choice and versatility, it can be difficult sometimes to know exactly how to style a pleated skirt.

You may find yourself relying on old favorites all of the time instead of trying something new and bold.

That’s why we’ve created this article to teach you how to style a pleated skirt. We have some classic looks and more modern styles for you to choose from.

Let’s get started!

Day Looks

Let’s begin by looking at some great day looks for a pleated skirt. Most of these are casual but there are a couple of options that will work in a business-casual setting.

T-Shirt

One of the easiest and most casual styles you can wear with a pleated skirt is to match it with a simple t-shirt.

There are several ways you can wear a t-shirt with a pleated skirt but our favorite option is to tuck the ends of a plain t-shirt into the waistband of your skirt.

Pleated skirts also look great with cropped t-shirts or those with graphic designs as well.

The t-shirt and pleated skirt look is a perfect match for sneakers or high tops. You can also add a light denim or biker jacket to finish this stylish but very casual look.

Sweater

If it’s a little too cold for a t-shirt, then sweaters are also a great match for pleated skirts. If your sweater is thin and plain, you can style it in many of the same ways you would style a t-shirt.

However, we love matching chunky and oversized knits with ankle-length maxi skirts! This gives a look that is not only stylish and cute but also warm!

Depending on your personal tastes, you can tuck the ends of an oversized sweater into your waistband or leave it loose with a belt to add some shape to your waist.

This winter look can be finished with some warm tights underneath and a pair of boots. Ankle boots are great but we particularly love wearing knee-high boots. Depending on the style of your sweater, you may be able to wear this in a business-casual office.

Button-Down Shirt

If you’re looking for something that is more business casual than strictly casual, then a simple button-down shirt matches perfectly with pleated skirts.

This is a great look for any office that doesn’t insist on business suits and we also love this style for a daytime date! It’s best with a crisp white shirt and you should tuck the shirt into your skirt.

We’d recommend matching them with plain colored skirts in more common colors such as black or navy. Like a sweater, this combination looks great with some boots. Match it with either a maxi or midi pleated skirt and for cooler weather, add a light trench coat.

Evening Looks

Evening Looks

Now that we’ve looked at some casual day looks, let’s look at how you can style a pleated skirt for a variety of evening looks. These are great for date night or a night out with the girls and no matter your style, you should find something to suit you.

Prints and Patterns

Evenings are the perfect time to go a little wilder with your choice in pleated skirts.

If you have a patterned pleated skirt keep it for your evenings and balance the color and prints of your skirt with a plainer top. We love floral, striped, and animal print pleated skirts teamed with a white or black top.

You can also pair these printed skirts with some fashionable heels. Go as high as you dare or opt for more comfortable and safe kitten heels. You can finish this look by teaming it with a plain black leather jacket as well.

Opt for shorter jackets that don’t go past your waist and you’ll have a trendy and edgy look that is perfect for a girl’s night out.

Lace Tops

For midi-length pleated skirts, we suggest choosing a lace top. These are great for date nights and you should consider the color of your lace top when you choose the color of your skirt.

For example, white lace tops are best suited to lighter-colored pleated skirts. Opt for pastel-colored midi skirts that are in delicate shades of lavender, pink, blue, and peach.

If you have a black lace top, however, this will work best with darker-colored midi-skirts. For example, look for skirts that are emerald green, dark purple, or wine red.

Darker lace tops and pleated skirts look great with either heels or knee-high boots. On the other hand, lighter tops and skirts are best with heels.

Off-the-Shoulder Top

Maxi-pleated skirts are the perfect complement to an off-the-shoulder top. These types of tops are sexy and chic and come in a variety of styles, as well.

You can opt for a more fitted off-the-shoulder top or a looser blouse. Whichever you choose, they’re fantastic for a date night or party.

Team an off-the-shoulder top with some heels. If the weather is a little cooler at night, you can keep yourself warm with a cardigan draped over your shoulders.

We wouldn’t recommend wearing a cardigan properly as it will look better when worn as a shawl over your shoulders.
